Printer Printing Blank Pages or Streaks? Printhead Problems Explained
You press Print, the paper goes through, and it comes out completely blank. Or the page is full of white lines, faded colours or streaks across the text. The ink tanks look full, so what went wrong? In most inkjet printers, the answer sits in one small part: the printhead.
If you are searching for printer printing blank pages, printer streaks fix or printhead repair KL, this guide explains what the printhead does, why it clogs or fails, what each type of streak means, and the checks you can safely try at home before paying for a repair or buying a new printer.
Our technicians see printhead problems every week on home and office printers from Epson, Canon, HP and Brother, especially ink tank models that sit unused for a few weeks. Kuala Lumpur’s heat makes ink dry faster inside the nozzles, so a printer that worked fine before a holiday can suddenly print blank.
Clogged Is More Common Than Dead
Most blank pages and streaks come from dried ink in the nozzles, which can often be cleared without replacing anything.
The Nozzle Check Tells You a Lot
One test page shows whether the problem is a single colour, many nozzles or the whole printhead.
Too Much Cleaning Causes New Problems
Every cleaning cycle uses ink and fills the waste ink pad. Running it again and again can trigger a new error.
Laser Printers Are Different
Laser printers have no printhead. Blank pages and streaks there point to toner, drum or fuser.
⚡ Blank pages right after changing the ink? Take the cartridge out and check for any protective tape or plastic cap still covering the nozzle or the air vent. It is one of the most common causes of blank pages with brand-new cartridges, and takes ten seconds to fix.
What the Printhead Does
The printhead is the part that sprays ink onto the paper. It has hundreds of tiny nozzles, each much thinner than a hair, that fire microscopic drops of ink as the head moves across the page. When some nozzles are blocked, you see lines or missing colours. When most of them are blocked or the head stops firing, the page comes out blank.
Where the printhead sits depends on the type of printer, and that changes how it is fixed.
| Printer Type | Where the Printhead Is | What It Means for You |
|---|---|---|
| Cartridge inkjet (many HP and Canon home models) | Built into each ink cartridge | A new cartridge also gives you a new printhead, so a fresh cartridge often fixes streaks. |
| Ink tank printers (Epson EcoTank, Canon PIXMA G, HP Smart Tank, Brother ink tank) | Stays inside the printer | Refilling ink does not renew the head. Clogs need cleaning, flushing or a printhead replacement. |
| Office inkjet with separate ink cartridges | Fixed in the printer, ink cartridges separate | Same as ink tank printers: the head is the long-term part that needs care. |
| Laser printers | No printhead | Print quality depends on the toner, drum and fuser instead. See the laser section below. |
Why Your Printer Prints Blank Pages
A completely blank page means ink is not reaching the paper at all. These are the usual reasons, from the simplest to the most serious.
Protective tape still on a new cartridge. The seal over the nozzles or the air vent stops ink from flowing. Always check this first after changing cartridges.
Dried ink after weeks of not printing. Ink dries inside the nozzles when the printer sits unused, especially in a warm room. This is the most common cause we see after long holidays.
Air in the ink lines. Ink tank printers that were tilted while moving, or that ran a tank completely empty, can get air bubbles in the tubes. Ink stops reaching the head even though the tanks are full.
Wrong or mixed ink. Using the wrong ink, or topping up one brand with another, can thicken the ink or block the head. Some low-quality inks also leave residue over time.
Dirty cartridge contacts. On cartridge printers, ink or dust on the gold contacts can stop the printer from firing the head properly.
Printhead electrical failure. If the head has failed, no amount of cleaning will help. This is less common, but it happens on older printers or after repeated clogging.
A software or settings issue. Occasionally the document itself is the problem, for example white text or a scanned PDF that is mostly blank. If a test page prints normally but your document does not, check the file first.
What Different Streaks Mean
The type of streak is a useful clue. Look closely at your printout and match it below.
Thin White Horizontal Lines
Some nozzles are blocked. The most common printhead symptom, and usually cleanable.
One Colour Missing or Wrong
Greens turn blue, skin tones look grey. One colour channel is clogged or its ink line has air.
Faded Print Across the Page
Low ink, a draft or economy setting, or a head that is starting to clog across many nozzles.
Blurry or Doubled Vertical Lines
The printhead is out of alignment. Running the alignment tool usually fixes this.
Ink Smudges or Dirty Marks
Ink on the rollers or inside the paper path, or a head leaking. Not always a clog.
Streaks That Get Worse After Cleaning
Air in the lines, a damaged head or a full waste ink pad. Time to stop and have it checked.
If the printer is not printing at all, not just printing badly, see our sister site’s printer not printing diagnosis and repair page.
Checks You Can Do at Home
These steps are safe and use only the tools already built into your printer. Do them in this order.
- 1.Check ink levels and cartridge tape. Confirm every colour has ink and that no seal or cap is left on a new cartridge.
- 2.Print a nozzle check. Look in the printer’s Maintenance menu, either on the printer screen or in the printer software on your PC. This prints a test pattern for every colour.
- 3.Run one head cleaning, then check again. If the pattern has gaps, run one cleaning cycle and print another nozzle check to see if it improved.
- 4.Stop after two or three cleanings. If it is improving, leave the printer switched on and resting for a few hours, then check again. Rest gives the ink time to soften dried nozzles.
- 5.Run printhead alignment. If lines look doubled or blurry rather than missing, the alignment tool in the same Maintenance menu usually fixes it.
- 6.Check the paper type setting. Printing on plain paper with a photo setting, or the other way round, can cause smearing and banding.
- 7.Keep the nozzle check pages. Bring them along if you visit us. They show the technician exactly what happened before and after cleaning.
The best prevention is simple: print one colour page every week, even if you do not need it. This keeps ink moving through the nozzles and stops them drying out.
How to Read a Nozzle Check
The nozzle check page shows a small grid or set of lines for each colour. Compare yours with the guide below.
| What You See | Likely Cause | Next Step |
|---|---|---|
| All lines complete | Printhead is fine | Check paper settings, alignment, the document or the rollers. |
| A few small gaps | Light clogging | One or two head cleanings, then rest and recheck. |
| One colour almost completely missing | Heavy clog, empty colour or air in that ink line | Check that tank. If it is full, the line may need a technician to clear it. |
| Every colour missing, completely blank | Severe drying, air in all lines or a failed head | Stop cleaning and bring it in for a proper check. |
| Gets worse with each cleaning | Air being drawn in, or the head is damaged | Stop cleaning. More cycles will only waste ink and fill the waste pad. |
Laser Printer? It Is Not the Printhead
Laser printers and many office copiers use toner powder instead of liquid ink, so there is no printhead to clog. Blank pages and streaks on a laser printer come from different parts.
Blank Pages
Often a new toner cartridge with its sealing strip still in place, an empty toner, or a toner or drum that is not seated properly.
Vertical Streaks or Lines
Usually a scratched or dirty drum, or a toner cartridge that is wearing out.
Repeating Marks
Marks that repeat at the same distance down the page point to a damaged roller, drum or fuser.
Toner Rubs Off
If print smudges when touched, the fuser is not melting the toner properly and needs checking.
For shared office laser printers and copiers, our sister site KL Computer also provides on-site IT support for offices across KL and the Klang Valley, so the printer can be checked where it sits.
What Not to Do
These are the mistakes we see most often from customers around Setapak, Cheras, Ampang and Kuchai Lama.
- ✓Do not run head cleaning ten times in a row. Each cycle pushes ink into the waste ink pad. Too many can fill it and trigger an “ink pad at end of service life” type error, which stops the printer completely.
- ✓Do not poke the nozzles. Pins, needles or cotton buds can permanently damage the printhead surface.
- ✓Do not mix ink brands in an ink tank. Different inks can react with each other and thicken inside the lines and head.
- ✓Do not tilt or lay an ink tank printer on its side. When moving it, keep it upright and use the transport lock if your model has one. Tilting lets ink leak and air enter the lines.
- ✓Do not unplug the printer at the wall every day. Switch it off with its own power button so it can cap and protect the printhead. Cutting power can leave the head uncapped and drying.
- ✓Do not buy a new printhead before testing. Air in the lines, a blocked damper or dirty contacts can look exactly like a dead head.

Repair or Replace the Printer?
This is the question most customers ask, and the honest answer depends on what the check finds.
Usually Worth Repairing
A clog that clears with a proper flush, air in the lines, dirty contacts or a full waste ink pad. These are common fixes on otherwise healthy printers.
Worth Comparing First
A failed printhead on a low-cost home printer. A new head can cost a large part of a new printer’s price, so we give you both options.
Higher-End or Office Printers
For larger office inkjets and A3 printers, a printhead replacement is often still far cheaper than replacing the whole unit.
Printhead Check & Repair Turnaround
Diagnosis comes first. We find out whether the cause is dried ink, air in the lines, the waste ink pad or the printhead itself, and explain your options before any repair work starts.
| Service | What’s Included | Est. Turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| Print Quality Check | Nozzle check, ink line and tank check, error code reading | Same day |
| Printhead Cleaning & Unclogging | Clearing dried ink and testing print quality after | Same day to 2 days, depending on how badly it is clogged |
| Ink Line & Air Clearing | Removing air from ink tank lines and restoring ink flow | Same day to 1 day |
| Waste Ink Pad Service | Replacing or servicing the ink absorber and clearing the related error | 1 to 2 days, depending on model |
| Printhead Replacement | Fitting a compatible printhead, alignment and full print test | Same day to 5 days, depending on parts |
Turnaround times are estimates and depend on the model and parts on hand. We confirm the exact timing and cost after the check.
